Young people helped elect the Liberals in 2015 on a platform that promised change. So when it comes to voting reform, we need to make sure that the voices of young people make it directly to PM Trudeau and the committee studying voting reform. And there’s only about a month left before the government’s voting reform consultations wrap up, so we have to move fast and spread the word!
The Liberals' recent disappointing climate announcements and support of pipeline projects is one reason to engage in this discussion. A new, more proportional voting system will allow us to elect more representatives from smaller parties and will force MPs and parties to make decisions and write legislation more collaboratively. Studies on countries with proportional representation show that more progressive policy is passed, meaning that we can make much needed progress on issues like climate change.
The event will have two main components: an introduction to the different types of electoral reform being considered and a series of open group discussions responding to questions pulled from the ERRE committee’s discussion guide. The results of the discussions will be included in a report submitted directly to the government committee on Electoral Reform.
